Vericare is a leader in geropsychology and geropsychiatry, two of the fastest growing segments of behavioral healthcare. We partner with respected, long-term care facilities nationwide to provide compassionate care and multidisciplinary behavioral interventions to elderly patients in skilled nursing facilities and long-term care settings.
Today in the United States there are nearly 40 million people age 65 and older. According to The National Council on Aging (NCOA), that number is expected to double and 20 percent of the U.S. population will be 65 years and older by 2050. The NCOA also reports that one in five older Americans suffer from anxiety and depression; yet often do not seek treatment for these issues because they incorrectly assume they are a normal part of aging. An even greater number of elderly residents of long-term care facilities experience depression, anxiety and other emotional issues as they face the challenges of aging. These are the patients that Vericare strives to help.
Vericare prides itself on understanding the challenges facing skilled nursing facility administrators. Nationally, of the more than two-thirds of nursing home residents with reported behavioral disorders, including depression and anxiety, fewer than five percent receive treatment. This condition persists today, despite the fact that in 1987 Medicare passed legislation that focused on patient rights and recognized psychologists as independent health care providers delivering valuable geriatric mental health services to the elderly residents of long-term care and skilled nursing facilities.
“What I like about Vericare is that it’s in an emerging field—geropsychology—and that area is going to get larger and larger as the population ages.”
